چکیده

Dissolved HL has been used as an indicator for measuring cardiac output by the techniques of constant-rate injection and sudden, single injection indicator dilution. Because of its low solubility, H2 is eliminated essentially quantitatively in the lungs and recirculates negligibly. The constant-rate injection technique involves the gas chromatographic measurement of pulmonary (or systemic) arterial H2 concentration during an infusion of dissolved H2 into a vena cava (or the left atrium). Measurements in anesthetized dogs agreed well with simultaneous measurements by dye dilution, direct Fick, and direct volumetric techniques. Measurements could be repeated several times a minute, and using a linearly responding platinum electrode, intravascular H2 concentrations could be recorded continuously. In the sudden, single injection technique, dissolved H2 was injected into a vena cava (or the left atrium) while monitoring pulmonary (or systemic) arterial H2 concentration with a chromatographically calibrated platinum electrode. Measurements again agreed with simultaneous measurements by dye dilution, constant-rate injection of H2, and the direct volumetric technique. Hydrogen curves could be repeated rapidly and integrated instantaneously. Hydrogen appears to be a useful indicator for rapidly repeated determinations of cardiac output and for measurements of output in situations in which recirculation of conventional indicators limits their usefulness. Automated non-invasive measurement of cardiac output by the carbon dioxide rebreathing method: comparisons with dye dilution and thermodilution.

The accuracy and reproducibility of indirect measurement of cardiac output at rest by the carbon dioxide rebreathing (indirect Fick) method with an automated respiratory analysis system (Gould 9000IV) were compared with simultaneous measurements made in duplicate by dye dilution and thermodilution in 25 patients having cardiac catheterisation studies. Measurements of cardiac output by the carbo...

Comparison of the accuracy of the lithium dilution technique with the thermodilution technique for measurement of cardiac output.

A new indicator dilution technique for measurement of cardiac output is described. Lithium chloride is injected via a central venous catheter and its dilution curve measured in arterial blood using a lithium-selective electrode. We assessed the lithium dilution cardiac output measurement (LiDCO) and a conventional thermodilution cardiac output measurement (ThDCO) by comparing the results of bot...

Calculation of Cardiac Output from Indicator-dilution Curves in the Presence of Mitral Regurgitation.

M EIER and Zierlerl have lucidly presented the theory underlying the application of indicator dilution of the measurement of flow in the vascular bed. This theory is not violated by the presence of valve incompetence provided that indicator particles that recirculate and reenter the vascular system can be excluded from the primary indicator concentration-time curve. Valve incompetence results i...

Cardiac output in normal men during steady-state exercise utilizing dye-dilution technique.

Measurement of cardiac output by various methods in both health and disease has received considerable attention lately. Because of the understandable hesitancy of investigators to subject normal subjects to prolonged, vigorous exercise in the upright position during cardiac catheterization, few observations of man's cardiac output in his normal exercising position have been made (Chapman and Fr...

Comparison of central and peripheral injection sites in the estimation of cardiac output by dye dilution curves.

• In the measurement of cardiac output by indicator dilution methods, the indicator may be introduced either centrally or peripherally. It is clear that use of a peripheral vein, particularly in large animals such as man, may result in two major sources of error, a) Indicator may be trapped between the injection site and the central circulation resulting in a small primary curve and an overesti...
